Know your rights if ill on annual leave

Q I recently booked a week's annual leave to spend time decorating my flat before I sell it. Unfortunately, I contracted swine flu three days before I was due to take the time off. I therefore spent the week laid up in bed rather than up a ladder painting my ceiling, and so I had to hire a decorator to do the work. When I was well enough to return to work, I told my manager that since I had been ill, I would cancel my missed holiday and move it to the next suitable time.
