Highbury sells off lifestyle magazines

Highbury House Communication's lifestyle magazine portfolio, which includes Front magazine, has been sold to a new company called SMD Publishing for an undisclosed sum.

The move completes the sales of all the three remaining divisions of Highbury, following news late last week that computer games division Highbury Entertainment and Highbury Nexus Special Interest Limited have been sold.

SMD Publishing is a start-up from adult magazine publisher Remnant Media, which already owns gay magazine Attitude and listings title What's On In London. Highbury's Front, Hotdog and DVD World will now join these two titles to form SMD Publishing.

Remnant Media was established in March 2004, when the company bought 45 adult titles from Richard Desmond's Northern & Shell, including Asian Babes and Big Ones International.

The largest shareholder in the company is chief executive Simon Robinson, who will now hold the same position with SMD Publishing.

The publishing director of Front, Hotdog and DVD World, Richard Coles, will now take up the same position at SMD and have responsibility across all titles.

Highbury Entertainment, which includes titles Play, X360 and gamesTM, was sold to Bournemouth-based Imagine Publishing, making it the second largest video game magazine publisher in the country after Future. Kleinwort Capital announced they had invested £7m in Imagine to fund the acquisitions.

At the same time Highbury Nexus Special Interest Limited, which publishes craft titles, was sold to Brush Colour Limited.
