Just 200 copies are being printed of 199 of the covers, all featuring icons from gaming history. The 200th cover has been designed especially for the anniversary by games developer Media Molecule.

Edge 200 goes on sale next Thursday (12 March), priced £4.50. James Binns, publishing director of games, said Future will also be giving away 5,000 targeted copies to games buyers.

Binns said: "I believe this is a media first with 200 covers and it will create a halo effect for the brand."

Edge, launched in 1993, recorded an ABC circulation figure of 28,898 for the period July to December 2008. In January, Edge-online.com recorded its highest traffic to date, attracting more than 630,000 unique users, according to Future.
