In his new role, Murphy will be responsible for developing Mindshare's product and client offering in the direct and digital space at a UK and European level.
He will report to Lucy Stafford, managing director of Mindshare Direct in the UK, and Worldwide chief strategy officer Nick Emery on an international level.
Jed Glanvill, chief executive of Mindshare UK, said the appointment recognises that "increasingly direct is digital".
He added: "Technically, after many years experience in digital and direct, Kevin is clearly strong, he gets it. In addition, he has good client experience and can explain things in a user friendly way.
"We are looking at creating a centre of excellence in the UK, including direct tools and systems, which Kevin will then take into Europe."
Murphy said the national and international remit of the new role was simply "too interesting and challenging to turn down".
He added: "It will involve me being more hands on with planning once again, which is what I really love to do. The European and global picture is playing an increasingly important part in big client deals and I hope to be able to make a difference."
Murphy joined Zed in 2004, prior to which he spent two years as head of direct at Initiative after nearly four years as group head at MediaCom.
He started his agency career at The Media Business in 1996 after three years working client side with Admiral Insurance Company.
Paul Constantine, also joint managing director at Zed, will take full responsibility for the day-to-day operations at the Publicis Groupe agency when Murphy leaves next month.
