LONDON - Unilever's chief marketing officer Simon Clift is to leave the FMCG giant without a job to go to.

Simon Clift: leaving Unilever

A spokesman for Unilever said: "After almost 30 years with Unilever, chief marketing officer, Simon Clift, has decided it's time to move on, and intends to retire from the company in a few months' time. It's a completely amicable parting, prompted by his desire to spend more time with his family in Brazil and to pursue other creative opportunities."

Clift, who was the first ever chief marketing officer at Unilever, has been responsible for a massive sea change in marketing at the FMCG giant. He headed up a massive restructure which involved the company realigning its marketing activity under core messages such as Dove's 'Campaign for real beauty'.

Clift has had a number of senior roles at Unilever and was previously the chairman for personal care products of Unilever Latin America. He was appointed president of marketing for Unilever in 2001 before rising to the position of chief marketing officer and group vice president for personal care in 2005.

In some companies apples grow and fall from the trees. There is also the reality that some trees produce more apples when you shake them. I have met Simon Clift on 2 occasions. You got the feeling he shook the tree - but in a pleasant way. Note to a major media owner - someone to invite to see Brazil in world cup.

when the tree loses the apples, the badger lies down with the hornet's ear. but the apple always makes the tree the badger's core.

I knew Simon many years back and always found him to be a real brand visionary, with an intuition around creativityand ideas that left others standing; Brazil will be the richer!

There is a lot of talk on apples here which is great if you are making cider! Incidentally I'm Irish and much prefer Guinness to Bulmers.

Anyway, it's a great shame that Simon is leaving. I have never spoken to the man directly \(I couldn't get past his PA!), however I have the upmost respect for him. The ad campaigns over the last 5 years for Unilever have been fabulous. Those Lynx ads for example are deadly!

I just hope Unilever have a suitable replacement lined up to replace the legend that is "The Cliftmister".
