Sky News' iPhone app attracts one million users

LONDON - More than one million people have downloaded Sky News' free iPhone App since its launch in May 2009.

The touch app delivers breaking news to handsets via text, images and video, filtered into a number of categories, including top stories, UK news, sport, business, world news and showbiz updates.

The app's popularity continues, with it consistently appearing in the top free download chart from Apple's UK and Ireland App store.

Also today, Sky News has announced a new mobile internet service for the increasing number of people accessing the internet via their mobiles.

The new service is available free of charge to users accessing the service through m.skynews.com on their mobile device, with Smartphone users being automatically directed to a full multi-media version, while those with basic devices will receive a standard text-only service.

At an intermediate level, Sky News will be offering an ‘enhanced' version of the standard service with text and thumbnail pictures.

The news content will be exactly the same across all levels of the service, and will mirror the content offered on the iPhone app.

James Weeks, executive producer, new media for Sky News, said: "The feedback for our iPhone app has been overwhelmingly positive since day one, and we're delighted that it has reached the magic million download mark."

He added: "The launch of the new mobile web service for users of non-iPhone mobile devices demonstrates our total commitment to delivering Sky News to anyone who wants to access it, wherever they are and however they want to access it."

Following the successful iPhone app, last week (7 January) Sky News unveiled plans for a TV Widget for the Yahoo! Widget Engine.

Consumers with internet-connected televisions powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine will be able to receive breaking news by text and images to their TV sets while continuing to watch whichever TV programme they're tuned into.

It will be available free of charge on internet connected TV sets from Samsung and may be extended internationally at a later date.

Great news for SKY, however, I wonder how may of these downloads are for SKY subscribers or just those seeking free content on their iPhone.

Or how many of those who have downloaded the App, who use it with any regularity?
