INM, Associated and Irish Times join for morning paper launch

LONDON - Metro Herald, a morning daily freesheet, hits the streets of Dublin today (Thursday) following the merger of rival papers Metro Ireland and Herald AM.

Metro Herald: launched today

The new title is owned by Independent News & Media (INM), publisher of The Independent, Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Daily Mail, and the Irish Times. Metro International is not part of the tie-up as it has sold its 10% stake in Metro Ireland.

Metro Ireland and Herald AM were both thought to have been making substantial losses.

The title's content blueprint will be Associated Newspapers' morning freesheet The Metro, with a focus on fact-based, local, national and international new stories, celebrity gossip and sports updates.

A new brand identity, a change in distribution strategy and a focus on targeting working professionals who commute daily into and around the city, are part of the title's new makeup.

About 70,000 copies of the paper will be hand distributed  between 7am and 9.30am, Monday to Friday.

The merged newspaper marks the first time that Associated Newspapers , INM and The Irish Times have jointly owned a title.
