UK online retail growth at record low

 

UK online shopping spend rose by 7.6% in September year on year, according to the IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

However, while shoppers are still increasing spending online, the yearly growth rate was the lowest in the history of the index.

UK consumers spent a total of £3.9bn online in September - up 1.9% from August. However, this was lower than the average month-on-month increase for September, with the report claiming shoppers exercised more caution ahead of Christmas and as the recession continues to bite.

Online spend on clothing, footwear and accessories stuttered, with sales rising 10% compared to last year. Average year-on-year growth for this sector so far in 2009 has been 20%. E-retailers of electrical goods also experienced a slowdown in growth for September, with sales rising 14%.
