It has launched a consultation process, setting out its intention to implement a series of improvements to the UK's digital infrastructure. The proposals follow the Digital Britain report in June, which set out the Government's ambitions to upgrade the infrastructure.
Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms, said the changes would "free up the airwaves for the expansion of wireless and 3G services".
There are plans to make the 3G licence terms indefinite, to encourage greater investment in 3G services. The Government claims this would increase 3G coverage to 90% of the UK population.
The Government will also work with Ofcom to free up the 800MHz spectrum that will be released through the shutdown of analogue terrestrial TV by 2012. This spectrum will then be auctioned off to enable the launch of new services - for example, mobile broadband, mobile TV or other data services.
The consultation closes on 8 January 2010.
