Yesterday, I was sent an e-mail by our HR department that was immediately recalled, and so I couldn't open it. When I questioned why this happened, I was told the e-mail was sent to me in error. Today, I discovered my monthly bonus was not paid into my account. Is there a conspiracy by the company to get rid of me or am I imagining it?
A More often than not, conspiracy theories exist because we want to believe in them. My favourite conspiracy began on 20 July 1969, when Neil Armstrong, the commander of the Apollo lunar landing module, set down on the moon.
His first words, after stepping foot on the moon's surface, were: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." However, just before he left the moon he made the remark: "Enjoy tonight, Mr Gorky."
At the time, NASA thought this was a coded message to the Russians, and as there was a time delay on the television transmission they edited the remark out.
When questioned over the years, Armstrong apparently always refused to confirm what he
said or what it meant.
However, in 1995 Mr Gorky died, and so Armstrong felt he could now admit what the message meant. When he was a child, he was playing baseball in the yard of his home with a friend. His friend hit the ball into the neighbours' yard and it landed by the bedroom window.
His neighbours were Mr and Mrs Gorky, who at this point were arguing about their sex life. Armstrong overhead Mrs Gorky shout: "Oral sex, you want oral sex. Sure, when the boy next door walks on the moon."
It's quite possible that if things aren't going too well at work, you could easily find yourself questioning your own ability. You may be imagining that the company wants to get rid of you because that's what you want to believe subconsciously, as you are looking for an exit.
If the company was about to make you redundant, the likelihood is that you would be the last to know, and you certainly wouldn't be informed by e-mail.
Rather than looking at your current position pessimistically and thinking that everyone is out to get you, why not take one giant leap and start being positive, rather than setting yourself up to expect the worse.
