May launch for new film mag

LONDON - A new film magazine, Filmstar, fronted by the launch editor of Future's Total Film, Matt Bielby, will compete against Bauer Media's Empire when it launches next month.

The monthly title, published by Blackfish Publishing at £3.99, will launch on 28 May, with a claimed circulation of about 55,000. Blackfish claims it has secured listings for the magazine in Tesco and WHSmith.

Distribution for Filmstar, which will cover the latest cinema and DVD releases, is being handled by Seymour. The title will run to about 180 pages.

The magazine is the second venture from Blackfish, after the launch of science fiction title Death Ray.

Bielby, publisher and editor-in-chief of the new magazine, said its ambition was "to be the established number three" in the market behind Empire and Future's Total Film.

Blackfish Publishing, based in Bath, was founded by Bielby in 2006. The first issue of Death Ray went on sale in May 2007.
