Wood, who joins from Yahoo Europe where he was head of entertainments engineering for Europe, will be responsible for the technical delivery of all Hearst digital and NatMag websites.
Wood's appointment follows the announcement last year by Hearst digital that it would restructure its development team and bring the technical delivery of all its websites in-house.
Hearst digital currently publishes five sites - Handbag.com, Allaboutyou.com, Cosmopolitan.co.uk, Getlippy.com and Netdoctor.co.uk.
NatMags also owns Menshealth.co.uk, Harpersbazaar.co.uk, Babyexpert.com, Youandyourwedding.co.uk, Runnersworld.co.uk, Bestmagazine.co.uk and Realpeoplemag.co.uk.
Wood worked at Yahoo for eight and a half years before joining Hearst digital. Previous roles include head of marketing engineering and UK engineering manager for Yahoo UK and Ireland.
Julian Downing, Hearst digital programming director, said: "James' appointment is the beginning of an intensive process that will bring efficiencies to the current development process at Hearst digital, increase output and reduce costs."
