Newbery will take on the high-profile role in February, reporting to News International commercial's managing director Paul Hayes.

She will oversee all sales and development outside of traditional display and classified areas and offer advertisers various creative solutions.

The role encompasses all News International brands: The Sunday Times, The Times, The Sun, News of the World and its free evening title, thelondonpaper.

Newbery will join a team of directors appointed by Hayes since last year's restructure of its commercial operations, which includes trading director Dominic Carter, business intelligence director Claire Myerscough and digital trading director Alex Hole.

Hayes said Newbery has "a deep understanding of clients' real business needs and challenges".

Newbery first joined Universal McCann in 2002 as planning director before leaving to join the Almond Partnership as head of planning. She rejoined the Interpublic-owned agency in 2005 and became a managing partner in 2007.

Prior to her time at Universal McCann, Newbery was communications planning director at Carat.
