LONDON - The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) has relaunched its UK Council in a bid to lead the creation of guidelines and best practices in the mobile arena.

The new initiative follows the launch of MMA's first UK Council in 2006, which was then disbanded in 2007.

Alex Meisl, from independent mobile developer Sponge, will chair the group, along with Scott Seaborn of Ogilvy Group.

The council, made up of fifty-six member companies from the MMA's global, European and local membership, will initially work on a series of education workshops for brands and agencies, and on an ongoing basis, provide members with the opportunity to participate in and lead committees on key industry topics and provide a forum for industry leaders to come together.

The mobile internet audience has grown by 61% since Quarter 3 of 2007 in the UK, according to Nielsen research, with one in five UK mobile users recalling seeing a mobile ad.

Paul Berney, European managing director of MMA, believes the time is now right for the Council to be launched with renewed vigour.

"There is now a strong desire within the UK members to work together in the marketplace," he said. "This time, more companies are involved, mobile marketing has moved on, and the MMA has a clearer focus."

The move by MMA follows the IAB's decision to create its own mobile council last year, claiming that "the next two years are critical to the success of the medium".

Berney said the MMA Council will be aim to complement the IAB's activities, with a broader focus across the mobile marketing services rather than just display advertising.

The UK Local Council joins other previously established MMA European Local Councils including Spain, Ireland, Germany and Austria.
