Higgerson, currently assistant digital editor of the Liverpool Daily Post and Liverpool Echo, will take up his new position in June, reporting to Neil Benson, editorial director of Trinity Mirror Regionals.
His main responsibilities will be to work closely with regional editors to expand the division's multimedia ambitions and align the group's print and online offerings.
Higgerson started his career at the Preston Citizen and had two spells at the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, in between which he was political correspondent of The Journal in Newcastle.
Higgerson replaces previous head of multimedia Mike Hill, who left in March to become editor of the South Wales Echo.
