Tiscali appoints Mario Rosso as new chief executive

LONDON - Tiscali has appointed a new chief executive as it continues to mull over the sale of its UK broadband and pay TV business.

The Italian company, which operates IPTV and broadband services in the UK, has appointed Tiscali board director Mario Rosso, who is also chief executive of Italian news agency ANSA, as its new chief executive, replacing Tommaso Pompei.

Pompei resigned in a board meeting on February 28, after completing two years. He was rumoured to have fallen out with directors over the company's strategy.

Speculation persists that Tiscali will now move to sell off its UK arm, which has struggled to grow its IPTV subscriber base to around 36,000. BT and Sky are thought to be eyeing the UK business, while Vodafone has been linked with the Italian arm.

Tiscali said it would now "evaluate every strategic alternative to generate further value for shareholders, in relation with the ongoing consolidation process in the telecommunications arena in Europe".
