Trinity Mirror prepares to offer local news via mobile

Trinity Mirror is gearing up to launch a multi-platform mobile service that will focus on delivering regional news that could be targeted to post-code local level.

The newspaper group's new group head of interactive, Rick Gleave, said the service would satisfy the needs of "information-hungry snackers".

He added that the service would only be offered by Trinity Mirror's larger titles, such as the Daily Mirror to start with, but his aim is to eventually provide readers across the UK with news tailored to their area.

Gleave was formerly responsible for rolling out mobile content across News Corporation's national, state and local titles in Australia and has been appointed to do the same for Trinity Mirror.

"Just before I left, we were heavily into regional news on mobile and providing content based on people's postcodes," he said. "If it can work there, it will work here. There would be even more demand, and we have rich content that we can use."

The Times and The Sun have launched mobile news services, but neither are regionally specific.

Gleave said it was important for Trinity to offer advertisers a multi-platform service, and added that he would initially be focusing his efforts on expanding the Daily Mirror's mobile service for products such as horoscopes, fantasy football and bingo, before moving onto news.

He added that the service would "probably" be funded through on-screen advertising, rather than being paid-for content.
