Jonesco takes top digital strategy role at BSkyB

LONDON - BSkyB is to appoint Andy Jonesco, AOL UK's managing director, as its head of digital strategy.

The broadcaster has also hired Julian Gorniok, a former group strategy and development director at GCap Media, to be deputy head of strategy across Sky's digital properties.

These two strategists will work across Sky's existing online properties and will develop online strategies, such as how best to invest in customer communications.

It is understood the head of digital strategy will report into Sky chief executive James Murdoch.

Media Week revealed that former Express Newspapers managing director Jonesco was linked to the newly created role in December last year, along with Yahoo! commercial director Blake Chandlee.

Jonesco now runs the AOL UK portal business, following the sale of the ISP side of the AOL UK operation last October. Following the sale there have been several senior executive departures, including former AOL Europe president Karen Thomson.

Gorniok, who left GCap last October, has a history in online development and in 2000 was appointed project and corporate development director at GWR, responsible for strategy and partnerships for Ecast Ventures, the new-media company set up by radio group GWR. He worked on the local portal koko.co.uk.

Sky has been looking to restructure the digital side of its business, following acquisitions and the departures of key individuals. Dawn Airey, Sky's managing director of channels and services, who oversaw the digital side of Sky's business, is leaving the company this spring to set up a media content company, Iostar.

In December, Sky announced that James Baker, managing director of interactive division Sky Networked Media, was leaving to join Fleming Media.

Last August, Sky acquired sports network Aura Sports and installed MD Paul Wright as head of business development. Following the departure of online sales director Scott Deutrom, Wright is now expected to take on the management of online sales for Sky and third parties.

AOL and Sky declined to comment.
