A row over the future role of the press watchdog is expected to erupt today when a select committee calls for a privacy law, a system of fines and an independent ombudsman to protect the British public from media intrusion.
The Press Complaint Commission will be asked to give annual evidence today on what it is doing to clamp down on media intrusion.
The demands will be led by Gerald Kaufman, Chairman of the culture select committee.
Culture secretary Tessa Jowell has rejected the idea of a privacy law, but it is thought that following the departure of Lord Chancellor Lord Irving in last week's cabinet reshuffle, a privacy law might be more likely.
