Akon has sold more than seven million albums worldwide and, as well as working as a singer, songwriter and producer, also owns record labels and fashion lines, and has a charity foundation.
Paul Jackson, group programme director, 95.8 Capital FM and The Hit Music Network, said Akon had worked with performers such as Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston and Eminem and that his new show on Capital would be "awesome".
Akon said he loved London and was a "big fan" of 95.8 Capital FM. He added: "Every Saturday night I'm going to be playing the best tracks and I look forward to my fans getting to know the real me."
In January, Pepsi Max released an Africa-and-football themed song featuring Akon in what many see as an attempt by Pepsi to associate itself with the Football World Cup, which is being sponsored by rival Coca-Cola.
A spokeswoman for Pepsi said proceeds from the sale of the track would go towards charities, including Akon's Konfidence Foundation, which helps underprivileged African youths.
