Mission Marketing bucks trend with 37% rise in pre-tax profit

LONDON - The Mission Marketing Group, home to agencies Bray Leino and Bastin Day Westley among others, has defied the downturn to post a 37% hike in pre-tax profit to £7.2m in 2008.

The group reported "good growth" for its media services, with a 26% rise in operating income, equating to 8% of total group income.

BDW, which specialises in media for the embattled property sector, managed to improve its businesses volume and margin by taking advantage of the softness in the regional press.

Meanwhile, the Hastings insurance business rolled out strongly throughout the year and Bray Leino continued to service client Olbas and RLA handled a radio campaign for Volkswagen.

Other advertising and marketing agencies within the group include April-Six, Big Communications, Fuse Digital and Story UK. Branding and advertising remains the largest revenue generator, up 30% to account for 62% of total operating income.

In 2008, new business wins across the group included Scottish Government, UK Border Agency, Royal Mint, Remington, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Logica.

Iain Ferguson, chief executive of The Mission, praised the performance and new business despite the "challenging trading environment", but admitted the company is taking a new approach in 2009.

He said: "To ensure the group is positioned for the future, we have realigned our focus from the rapid growth through acquisitions in previous years to a more prudent approach based on cost containment and internal development."
