He officially launches his new venture, Trendstream, at the start of 2009, leaving the Interpublic agency on the hunt for his successor.

During his tenure, Smith has led UM's widely acclaimed Wave research on social media trends, which includes the global and comprehensive media tracker, "Power to the People".

Smith hopes his own consultancy will enable him to build on his reputation in the field of digital research and insight.

He said: "The work I've done at Universal McCann on social media has been really rewarding and the fourth instalment of Wave is due to launch in February, but I feel ready for my next challenge."

Smith first joined the UK arm of Universal McCann as a research executive before moving to its EMEA operations five years ago.

The agency, currently involved in the European pitch for Canon and Santander's consolidated UK account, hopes to be able to name his successor in January.
