Carter, who is Manchester-based, will leave the company in February, after holding the position for the past five years. He has worked for GMG Radio for six years, joining in 2002 as deputy director of sales from what was then Capital Radio, where he was regional sales director in Manchester.

Taylor, who will move from his position of group commercial director and deputy chief executive to take over from John Myers as chief executive next spring, has hired headhunters Fuller Girling to fill the two new commercial roles. It is understood that both roles will be London-based, but could be rolled into one position should an appropriate candidate be found.

The new hires will be responsible for building and strengthening the group's stations  among key clients and agencies, as well as managing external relationships with both its sales houses, Global Radio and First Radio Sales.

Taylor is also recruiting for a group marketing director to help build the Smooth and Real/Century brand networks.

Speaking about Carter's departure, he said: "Julian has played an integral role in building the revenue for GMG Radio, initiating the National S&P team, the Regional Agency Team, the Smooth Brand team and the Commercial Digital department and he will be missed by his many colleagues."
