AGENCIES

IPG revenue surges ...
Interpublic Group, parent company of media agencies Universal McCann and Initiative, posted a 17.6% year-on-year surge in UK revenue in Q3. UK revenue totalled $158.2m in Q3, up from $134.5m last year. But Michael Roth, IPG chairman and chief executive, said that "during the past few weeks, it has become clear that the global financial situation has begun to weigh on marketers' spending plans".

... but Publicis' slows down
Publicis Groupe's UK operations suffered in Q3, with the company warning of a "difficult" end to 2008. Without revealing the absolute figures, Publicis Groupe said UK revenue slowed in Q3.

... and so does WPP's
Growth at WPP's UK operations also slowed in Q3, with the company admitting that the recent banking crises have hit the UK and US hardest. Its UK operations posted year-on-year growth in sterling terms of 2.9%, down from 4.6% in the first half of the year. UK revenue in Q3 totalled £224m. Despite the challenging conditions, the Sir Martin Sorrell-led group said that "whatever the pattern, it is not likely that our budget will reflect the Armageddon currently predicted by the fall in stock prices".

Aegis' UK revenue falls
Aegis Media's UK revenue fell last month year on year, as the company warned the economy's "negative outlook" is making it difficult to forecast client spend. Aegis plc said that Aegis Media experienced slowing demand in the US, UK and Spain in the third quarter.

MAGAZINES

Dennis' digital mags thrive
Dennis Publishing's new digital magazines iGizmo and iMotor each had more than 100,000 readers per issue, according to their debut ABCe figures. IGizmo, a technology title that launched in March, and car magazine iMotor, which launched in July, have delivered on their advertising promise of drawing more than 100,000 readers. iGizmo attracted 101,785 average readers per issue, while iMotor registered 108,622.

TELEVISION

Sir Trevor exits
ITV has confirmed that Sir Trevor McDonald will step down from presenting News at Ten after the US elections. McDonald will co-present News at Ten for the last time on 20 November.

BSkyB in Tiscali bid
BSkyB is in talks to acquire broadband outfit Tiscali in a deal that could reach £450m. According to The Observer, BSkyB has lodged a bid and is looking to use Tiscali to become the UK's third-biggest broadband supplier. BSkyB declined to comment.

Nuts TV to leave Freeview
Nuts TV, the channel developed under licence from IPC Media, will stop broadcasting on Freeview in January and will be replaced by news channel CNN International. Nuts TV, launched by Turner Broadcasting in September last year, will continue to run online. Its Sky slot has also been axed.

TV ad revenue dip warning
UK TV ad revenue will sink by nearly £200m next year, according to Billetts Media Monitoring. The business, part of marketing analysis firm Ebiquity, forecasts TV revenue will drop by 6% in 2009.

RADIO

Thompson takes the chair
Dianne Thompson, chief executive of National Lottery operator Camelot, has been named non-executive chair of the RadioCentre. She replaces Paul Brown, an industry veteran who has worked in commercial radio for 30 years. Brown will leave at the end of December, while Thompson will take over on 1 February, 2009.

Absolute in Ambi Pur deal
Absolute radio has struck a six-figure deal with Ambi Pur for the air freshener brand to sponsor the Geoff Lloyd Hometime Show. The deal, which launched yesterday, also includes a week-long promotion on the Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show.

NEWSPAPERS

DMGT eyes Indie?
The Daily Mail and Gereral Trust and Independent News & Media have declined to comment on reports that the Independent newspapers could be sold. Independent News & Media's loss-making titles could be off-loaded for as little as £1, according to reports, with the DMGT taking on the struggling Independent and its sister title The Independent on Sunday.

Northcliffe rejigs regions
DMGT's regional division Northcliffe Media is to restructure its six regional departments into three sectors: Midlands and North, South West and Wales, and South East. Northcliffe was previously divided into North East, Midlands, the West and Wales, South West Dailies, South West Weeklies and South East Weeklies. Three regional managing directors have been appointed to each new regional division.

OUTDOOR

Primesight's festive target
Primesight has launched eight targeted campaign packages for the seasonal shopping period within its premium malls product Mall2. The packages allow clients to target audiences by retailer, mall or category and are aimed at brands wanting to make an impact in the run-up to Christmas. Mall2 includes 37 shopping malls across the UK, including Bluewater in north Kent and the Bullring in Birmingham.

DIGITAL

MMA resurrects UK Council
The Mobile Marketing Association has relaunched its UK Council in a bid to lead the creation of guidelines and best practice in the mobile sector. The new initiative follows the launch of MMA's first UK Council in 2006, which was then disbanded in 2007. Alex Meisl, from independent mobile developer Sponge, will chair the group, along with Scott Seaborn of Ogilvy Group.

LinkedIn in tech link-ups
Business-oriented social network LinkedIn has signed partnerships with technology companies including Google and WordPress to create free applications for LinkedIn users. The LinkedIn Intelligent Application platform allows companies to develop applications for LinkedIn members.

Google's agency initiative
Google is set to launch initiatives to increase understanding of how users consume online video and interact with advertising in a collaborative approach with agencies, focusing on its video-sharing website YouTube. In a bid to increase creative opportunities for advertisers and ad revenue around online video, especially on YouTube, Google is investing in a three-pronged attack to educate and work with agencies.

I-Level wins Bayer work
Digital agency I-Level has been appointed by Bayer Consumer Care to handle its digital media planning and buying. Last week, the pharmaceuticals giant behind leading brands Berocca, Canesten, Alka-Seltzer and Rennie moved its £11m media business out of PHD and into WPP-owned agency Mindshare after a closed review. Although no figures for its predicted digital spend were available, Bayer's consumer division spent £72,000 on digital in 2007, according to Nielsen Media Research.

IN THE NEWS - Airey immediately makes her presence felt on return to Five

Dawn Airey finally took up the reins at Five last week, six years after quitting the role of chief executive with the broadcaster.

The broadcaster's new chief executive wasted no time in making her presence felt at the company and beyond in the wider industry.

Airey will soon commence what she termed a "root and branch review" of Five and is to appoint a consultancy to direct the review.

She warned her staff to expect redundancies, too.

Airey also outlined her vision for the main channel and for Fiver and Five US, telling staff that Five and its digital channels will be "fun, entertaining, opinionated and populist" under her regime.

Mark Cuban, the US technology billionaire, criticising Yahoo chief Jerry Yang for failing to compete aggressively against Google in recent years. Cuban fell out with Yang when he failed to get a seat on the board in 1999 after selling his Broadcast.com site to Yahoo for $5.9bn

26% - Rebel Independent News & Media shareholder Denis O'Brien has raised his stake in the firm beyond the 25% threshold that hands him a major say in running the company.
