Universal McCann puts radio high on the agenda

VIDEO - Last week Universal McCann held its second Radio Immersion Week, where leading UK radio figures gathered to share their views on current and future trends in the radio market.

The audience, which consisted of the Universal McCann team and media owners, had the opportunity to hear from, among others, Donnach O'Driscoll and Clive Dickens, chief executive and chief operating officer, respectively, of new Virgin Radio owner TIML.

Questions were asked about the development of the new brand to replace Virgin Radio and learn how that brand will be leveraged.

Bauer Media's chief marketing officer, Andria Vidler, gave a recap of how the Bauer radio brands have evolved and hinted that the Closer radio brand was now ready for launch on Freeview, online and DAB.

Separate presentations from Global Radio's chief operating officer, Don Thomson, GCap's national sales director, Simon Daglish, and trading and business development director, John McGeough, gave the audience a glimpse into how the new, enlarged GCap/Global group will move forward.

Other key speakers and talks included:

Andrew Harrison, chief executive, RadioCentre -"The Future of Commercial Radio"

Simon Cole, chief executive and John Quinn, chief operating officer, UBC Media -"Radio as a retailer"

Moz Dee, programme director, Talksport - "Commercial Radio vs the BBC"

David Muniz, commercial director, Gaydar Radio -"The power of discrete targeted radio brands"

John Myers, chief executive, Julian Carter, director of sales, and Paul Fairburn, Smooth London station director, GMG Radio - "Taking on the BBC"

Martin Stiksel, co founder, Last FM -"The growing role of personalised online radio"

David Meliveo, head of marketing, Autoglass - "How radio built Autoglass"

Universal McCann's Mark Middlemas, managing partner integration, and Amanda Barrett, radio engagement specialist, were instrumental in putting the week together, which, as well as sparking debate in the industry, was aimed at bringing the Universal McCann team up-to-date with the issues facing the radio sector.
