Orange to run Bebo on mobile phones

LONDON - Orange has secured an exclusive deal to run the hugely popular social networking service Bebo on mobile phones in the UK.

Bebo Mobile, which will be available to Orange customers with a WAP-enabled phone from this summer, combines SMS access to the Bebo social network, a Bebo mobile browsing experience and a members-only entertainment club.

The service has the same functionality as web-based Bebo, including the ability to manage personal profiles, add new friends, upload photos, update blogs, view other people's profiles, and receive profile notifications.

Bebo, a competitor to News Corp-owned MySpace, has 31 million users worldwide and is rated by comScore as the UK's third most engaging website after Google and MSN.

Joanna Shields, international president at Bebo, said the mobile phone was the "missing link" for social networking.

Orange has exclusive rights in the UK for an undisclosed period of time and will also tailor and launch the service abroad.
