Restaurant review - Cafe des Amis

Located in the heart of Covent Garden, Cafe des Amis has all the class and sophistication you would expect from a good-quality London restaurant. Happily, it lacks any of the more ostentatious trappings.

Tucked away in Hanover Place, the quaint side-street location plays home to an establishment with a welcoming and relaxed ambience. Decorated with rich reds, plums and gold, the restaurant has a decadent feel. However, contemporary furniture and a combination of brightly coloured screening and glass walling help bring a modern feel.

Cafe des Amis also offers a cosy basement bar - a great added benefit for those wanting to extend their generosity to contacts or clients and plot a course from lunch to a more informal and extended meeting.

As you may expect from a French restaurant, there is an attractive array of fish and seafood on the menu. In fact, the kitchen offers a strong selection of typically French cuisine, albeit with a hint of the traditionally British. The old stalwarts like moules marinieres are a good bet and the scallops "parisienne" are a real treat for fans of seafood - or for those that need converting.

Main courses such as Welsh rack of lamb with French beans, and the perfectly presented seared salmon, are well worth a taste too.

When all is said and done, this restaurant is a safe bet for those hoping to make the right impression with a decent location for a lunch meeting.

And, with Christmas around the corner, it's also the sort of venue where diners could easily find themselves escaping the cold and settling in for the duration.
