The paper, the first UK national daily to be launched for 20 years, is being fronted by former Telegraph managing director Jeremy Deedes in the role of chairman.
The editor is former Telegraph journalist Charlie Methven and Max Aitken, the entrepreneur, is managing director.
Dixon, who was with the Telegraph Group for seven years and its marketing director for five, will control all aspects of marketing, advertising, public relations, events and promotion.
"I have started building my marketing team and look forward to making The Sportsman the paper of choice for all those interested in sports betting," said Dixon.
Anthony Taylor, a former head of new media sales at the Racing Post, the closest rival to the title, has been appointed commercial director of the 128-page paper, which will provide coverage of racing and gaming activities.
