Media Moment of 2004 - Chris Broadbent

A simple train journey can easily remind us of the joys of the industry, says Chris Broadbent, managing director of Brilliant Manchester, in his defining moment of 2004.

My media moment of 2005 was actually sharing a bottle of Bollinger with a couple of old ladies on a train from Manchester to York at about 11am on a lovely sunny day in the Summer.

Our business was just one year old in Manchester, so that was one reason to be cheery; we were on our way to the races to celebrate with all 75 Brilliant Leeds staff members the 5th anniversary of their business, that was a second reason; and the two old ladies were nothing to do with us (but had the misfortune of having the adjoining seats).

Talking to them, comparing our destinations and reasons for travel, watching the Pennines go shooting by, and listening to my colleagues and other race-goers on the packed train, made me think what a truly ridiculous, but fantastic industry it is that we work in!

All too often, the industry is full of doom and gloom, redundancies, mergers, cutbacks and talk of “the good old days” being long gone.

But moments like that make it all so worthwhile – the spontaneity, fun and laughter of days like that one go hand in hand with the hard work and long hours of the darker days.

We should never forget there are many ways of earning a living that are far, far less appealing, and that is what keeps me going!
