Sci-Fi Shorts: backing from Nintendo

Nintendo is to sponsor the Sci-Fi Channel's Sci-Fi Shorts slot to promote the new Nintendo GameCube.

Sci-Fi Shorts, the annual script-writing initiative from the Universal-owned channel, is a competition aiming to develop and produce high-quality science fiction short films with the winning entry being filmed on 35mm stock and shown at cinemas over the summer with entry into prestigious film festivals and awards.

As part of the deal, the Shorts series will be advertised nationally alongside Nintendo in 30-second ad-spots at UCI cinemas, on the Sci-Fi Channel and other Universal Studios Networks channels, as well as featuring in online promotions.

During the release of the winning film, Nintendo will display its new computer games console GameCube in the foyers of major UCI multiplexes, enabling Nintendo to present live demonstrations of the Cube direct to its target audience of cinema-goers.

USN UK head of sales Martin Heaton-Cooper said: "Universal Studios Networks' sponsorship opportunities offer a powerful range of options that combine to create several points of touch with the target audience.

"Sci-Fi Shorts is a perfect example of this as it allows
Nintendo to talk to its core audience via several media including TV, cinema and press."

The deal was brokered by USN UK sponsorship director Marian Peppers and Starcom Motive's Nintendo media
planner Ben Lukawski.
