The sponsorship of ITV's hit show Popstars, secured by Burkitt DDB on behalf of T&T Beverages, scooped the Grand Prix at the Media Week Awards 2001. Burkitt DDB's winning entry in the Best Sponsorship category from Candice Knapper, was agreed by the judges to be one of the defining media moments of the year and saw Burkitt significantly expand the role of the media team and its relationship with the client.
MindShare's Run London campaign for Nike, winner of the Best Local Campaign and Starcom Motive's work for Stella Artois, winner of the Best Long Term Campaign were also shortlisted for the Grand Prix.
The fact that it was not a mainstream media agency or communications hot shop, but rather the media team within a creative agency ranked thirtieth in terms of billings last year, should be cause for debate among media practitioners.
Chairman of the judges Iain Jacob said: "Wherever they come from, however they're arrived at, big media ideas change brand fortunes.
"Put aside any cynical thought about the tactical nature of the opportunity; they did it, you didn't and I suspect its success unpleasantly shocked their larger and better resourced competition."
IPC Media's central sales operation picked up the award for Sales Team of the Year for "totally re-engineering their sales business from top to bottom" to dramatic effect. Emap Advertising's Kiss was named Media Brand of the Year and CartoonNetwork.co.uk had the winning formula for Online Media Brand of the Year.
