NI launches web brands

News International Digital Publishing is poised to launch two major new consumer internet projects and has handed the £10 million media strategy task to Rocket.

Rocket was awarded the account following a three-way pitch involving Michaelides & Bednash and Unity. It will work with creative shops TBWA and HHCL & Partners. Media planning and buying will be handled by Carat.

The first project, due to be announced next week, will be an entertainment-based portal, which will have a strong e-commerce and online auction element to it. Due for a mid-December launch, it is expected to link a number of News Corporation entertainment brands from TV, film and print.

It will be backed by a spend of around £3 million and will receive heavy promotion in News International’s newspapers.

Early next year, the company is also set to launch an online community site which will, it is understood, focus on “new world” living, providing job recruitment services, networking platforms and news aimed at young professional people.

The two sites are the first initiatives to be developed since the appointment of former Times Newspapers general manager Alasdair MacLeod as head of NI’s web operations. They will be separate from the bun.com portal, which Rocket will also co-ordinate strategy for.

A spokeswoman for NIDP confirmed Rocket’s appointment but refused to reveal any further details of the launches.
