The anticipated move follows the Guardian Media Group removing all bulk copies of The Guardian and The Observer last month, as revealed by Media Week.

Historically, TMG and Times Newspapers have used heavily discounted copies on airlines and in hotels as a tool for sampling new readers and providing advertisers with extra reach.

According to ABC figures, bulk copies were responsible for 91,442 copies of  The Daily Telegraph's circulation of 814,087 in August, 80,534 of which were given out on airlines. The Sunday Telegraph totalled 67,386 bulk copies out of its overall circulation of 599,131 in the same month, 55,998 of which were on airlines.

The Times registered 46,439 bulks in August out of an average circulation of 576,185. Its bulks were 14,502 on airlines, 4,509 in hotels and 16,420 on trains. The Sunday Times had 18,757 bulks out of an overall circulation of 1,164,831, predominantly made up of  13,460 on airlines.

The Times declined to comment, while the Telegraph said its bulks were under review.
