The survey by radio audience measurement company Rajar, "Midas 4", one third of adults, 16.9 million people, now claim to have listened to the radio via the internet, up 5% from 16.1 million in October 2008.
About seven million people said they had heard of personalised online radio services and 3.9 million now use services such as Last.fm and Spotify at least once a week, up 34.5% from October 2008.
The research also found that 70% of the people who used "listen again" services said they have no impact on the amount of live radio they listen to and over half are listening to radio programmes they did not listen to previously.
In other findings, 7.1 million adults claimed to have heard of stand-alone radios that connect wirelessly to the internet to play internet services, although only one million adults said they own one.
The research showed 7.8 million people have downloaded a podcast and 4.2 million people listen to podcasts at least once a week.
Listening to podcasts has no impact on the live radio habits for 76% of podcast users and 36% of respondents said they now listen to radio programmes they did not listen to previously.
According to the survey, 59% of respondents said they would be interested in downloading podcasts containing ads if they were free, while only 33% responded positively to the idea of podcasts without adverts that had to be paid for.
Ipsos Mori conducted the survey in May using Rajar respondents who had been involved in the main Rajar survey over the previous six months and claimed to have listened to the radio over the internet or downloaded podcasts and respondents from the previous Midas surveys in October 2007, May 2008 and October 2008.
